Living the Dream Life

Taylor Pierre
Dream Life
By Lauren Mechling

Do you wish that you could have visions of the future? What if there was an object, or I should say, a gift that could help you with that? Visions are usually portrayed as good things, but they can have a downside, especially if they have to do with someone you care about. This was the case for Claire.

In this book, we meet Claire Voyante, a teenage girl with a secret. Throughout her whole life, Claire has been able to have weird visions. Her grandmother, Kiki, gave her an onyx and ivory cameo necklace that allows her to see into the future, through her dreams "In the three months since Kiki had given me my magic black and white cameo necklace, my lifelong habit of seeing weird, random visions in my head had transformed into something much weirder"(7). These visions helped to save her best friend Becca, and even though it sounds great to be able to have these visions, Claire doesn’t seem to think so, mostly because her dreams have made her very aware to the point that she is having a hard time figuring out if certain things in her dreams need to be taken as seriously as she thinks they do "I can see how it might sound fun, but this special talent, or whatever you want to call it, is kind of stressful." (10). Aside from keeping this secret from Becca, she’s also hiding the fact that she has a crush on Becca’s brother, Andy, and she is having a hard time even figuring out their relationship, "Andy was standing in the shadows of the doorway. He was staring at me like I was something beautiful and I felt a kick in my heart." (7). Soon Claire finds out that Becca has been keeping a secret of her own for a while, but Claire just can’t figure out what….until Becca needs Claire’s help. Will Claire’s dreams change her life or will they change someone else’s?

Although I have not finished the entire book, from what I’ve read so far, this book is pretty good. I would recommend this book. I would not say to get this book immediately but it is a good book from what I’ve read so far. What really connects me to this book is the main character. I feel like I can relate to Claire in a way, seeing that we are both teenagers and that we both have had something passed down to us, for Claire it was her cameo necklace, for me it is my great great grandmother’s ring. Claire is a girl that is trying to get through her teen years and figuring out things with the help of her friends and Kiki and is just trying to fit in. In some ways, I can relate to Claire. In this time of my life, I am just trying to get through my teen years and I am trying to figure things out, like what I want to do with my life and thankfully I have the help of my family and friends too. There were times where I tried to fit in but then had the realization that I don’t have to fit in, and I just need to be myself, and I think Claire is starting to realize that.

I will say that if you really want to read this book, it’s more for realistic fiction lovers. Since this does take place from the perspective of a teenage girl, I would say this book would be more recommended towards teenagers/young adults. If you like realistic fiction, then this book is the book for you.
